By the looks of it....
My Matt missed the memo that we were doing a funny face....
hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee hee!
P.S. This picture is compliments of my sister in law Liz (a-beth) who said I looked like a dinosaur- to which I looked at the picture after she said it and we busted up laughing (again)
I will be blogging about being a wife for the past 29 years, being a mom/mother in law to four adult children, a two-time Nana, and being a mom to our precious daughter, who joined our family by way of an open adoption. I will also bring you along, periodically, what life is like as I walk through a Stage III Breast Cancer Diagnosis. May God always be glorified through the words spoken on this blog- For it is to Him we owe all the Glory for each moment of our everyday life.

but he was dad...
I was standing at my sister in law Rhonda's kitchen sink yesterday, looking out into her backyard, and stopped my eyes at the two hummingbird feeders hanging from the tree just beyond the window.
It's interesting how, when you have lost someone you love, you have moments where something will bring back a memory- or multiple memories will flood you....make you stop in your tracts and all but take your breath away. I have found that the memories in those moments did not seem significant at the time of making- they may have been just ordinary moments that passed unrecognized....maybe repetitive actions, sights, sounds, or smells that were so familiar you didn't realize how much your heart would miss them when they were gone.
It has been almost 6 months since Matt's dad went to his Heavenly home
Matt and I talk fairly often about how much we miss him
oh, he was ornery and stubborn
he had made his fair share of mistakes
and choose so much complicated
but he was dad
a man I cared deeply about and loved dearly
a man I sat many an hour with
on his porch at the house on Minthorne
he drinking his coffee (in 100 degree weather) and I drinking water (out of the same Tupperware cup)
we would watch the hummingbirds that seemed to flock to his feeders- the ones hanging from the porch we were sitting on.....moments passing unrecognized for the memories they would someday bring.

As I snapped the picture of Rhonda's hummingbird feeders it was automatically spoken- even though dad was not present..even though he couldn't hear- It still needed to be said... for grief's sake- for healing's sake...
"I love and miss you dad."
After I said those 6 words, the grief started quieting down and I thanked God for the memories I have of Matt's dad...the good ones are so fun to remember and the bad ones are great reminders that we all need grace and love from each other.
Moments are such a gift...
God allowing us to create memories...
places in our heart where we remember and keep with us those we love.

knit picker and the psychological itch
The first and only time I have had head lice was after visiting my great- grandma Griffin. The canned tuna fish that my grandpa had caught and canned in their pantry frightened me more having small bugs crawling around my head. Both Jodi and I came down with a raging case of lice after spending the night at her house...the canned tuna, hearing my great grandma calling her dog over and over (Tulee), and that her bathroom floor had a slant to it are the memories I still remember to this day. I also remember that her house smelled like Ovaltine (I can still see her standing at her stove warming the water so I could drink Ovaltine with her) and coastal moldy air (she lived in a small coastal town just across the California boarder).
The one and only time I remember staying at her house overnight built an arsenal of memories Jodi and I would use against each other well into our high school years. For years, we would say the word 'Tulee' in a high pitch slight yell and then bust up laughing- Jod and I would also try to gross each other out at the dinner table (again, this is years after our nights stay) and say things like 'There is grandma Griffin hawk in your milk'. The fact that someone would can fish meat (all that tuna in the pantry) was beyond anything I could comprehend- It was bad enough that our pet cow Bandit had recently been butchered and I was dealing with trying to will myself to eat that meat....then you throw in the new knowledge that fish meat could be canned and wa-la....let the food phobias begin.
I really think the cure-all for our head lice was that my mom brought us to the local beauty school and had the economy perm done. Whatever the lice treatment didn't take care of, that perm solution did.
Fast forward 14 years and add into the factor that I had just graduated from Beauty School.
I remember the first case of head lice I ever encountered. As I was parting off this poor woman's hair to start coloring, I noticed a patch of off white small like dandruff clump of knits. It's something you don't even really need to be educated on....you just know when you see it.
I didn't have the heart to send her out knit ridden so I ushered her off to the store to buy 'treatment' and we sat in the salon I worked at....hour after hour....and I picked her knits out (knits are the eggs before they hatch into lice- the lice are the actual bugs). We hugged when it was all over and she vowed to come back in for a knit check.
It was then I knew I would forever be a knit picker
and since then I have picked the knits out of more people's hair than I can count
I would much rather pick knits than go pick up brown eggs (which come from chicken's 'vents' not butts is what Russ from my church informed me...bleh)
I would much rather pick knits than stare at home canned fish meat (sorry grandma griffin)
I would definitely much rather pick knits than....well, than a lot of things that people would consider normal
now that we've talked about lice....
let the fact that we've talked about it sink in.....
now go ahead....
reach up to your head and give it a scratch....
That there is called the psychological itch :)
p.s. Just an FYI-
It's knit/lice season. Over the past several months I have seen many cases (and done my fair share of knit picking). I learned about a product from a sweet friend who battled a significant case of lice called Vamousse. Over the past 20 years I have used most every product over the counter and this by far exceeds them all. It is a bit spendier ($19.99 instead of $6-10) but worth every penny. You can find it at Wal Mart. I have yet to see a case of head lice cured if the person saves their pillow (some try to put it in the dryer) and I have yet to see a case cured without multiple treatments. While Tea Tree and other natural remedy's are great for maintenance- they are not great for the initial treatment- knits and lice are hearty and can withstand a lot....it's usually takes the strong stuff and unfortunately it's not 'all natural'.
Hope this helps....happy knit picking!!

bullet point babble
In the effort to get back into the swing of blogging, I've decided to spend the next 15 minutes babbling.
I only have 15 minutes because that is when I've got to leave to pick Ry up from baseball practice.
I'll bullet point babble so I can change subjects a million times without having to try to think of ways to connect the sentences :)

- One of my longest and dearest friends Holly has a daughter in law who is in labor today- Holly's son Wesley and her daughter in law Kelsi will give their baby girl Holly's middle name....Bond. Precious Precious Precious!!
- I was able to be on a panel with 2 other parents today at Ryan's school. He attends a small charter school that is funded mostly by Grants. The 'monitors' of some of those grants flew in from North Carolina and Washington DC to interview parents and get a feel for if the grant money is being used appropriately. I appreciate an honest conversation that is respectful with eyes wide open- when both the good and bad can be discussed in a way that is helpful to all involved....when solutions are sought and answers are raised....when what needs to be appreciated is and what needs to be changed gets addressed. All that to say, it was a good meeting.
- 3 minutes
- Oklie turned 7 years old last week. In dog years, I think she turned 49....my boys are ready to trade her in for a 'big' dog. Sorry guys, no big dog for another 7 years...Shih-Tzu's are said to live to the ripe old age of 14.
- Last one
- I shopped for a bit at Goodwill this afternoon...after shopping, I sent my friend Deb the following text "I just got you two things at Goodwill. Remember that color is our friend AND promise not to judge until you try on :) :) to which she replied "Ha! Ha! I don't know whether to be excited or a little scared" .................ahahahahaaaaa.........both Deb...BOTH!!
- P.S. Julie- I got your message- It was so nice hearing your voice...Miss you and will call soon- Give Isaiah a hug from his Auntie Steph and tell the rest of the fam Hi.
| Looking forward to this!! |

Just a thought
I wonder if.....
Will the fine change the bakery's owners hearts.....
Will not baking the cake change the gay couples heart.....
every person who reads this blog will unanimously answer the same
So was anything accomplished or was the band aid, yet again, put over the stitch required wound,
It seems that showing love, whatever that looks like in the situation, is a sure fire way to get it right-
I wonder if the reason Jesus focus is so much on Love in the Bible (over 550 times) is because He knew that would be one of our biggest struggles....To love one another
I don't know, it's all just a thought guys.....just a thought
p.s. If any arguments start under my facebook newsfeed I will delete them- Not because I do not respect your opinion but because this post is about showing love....not about being divisive. You can send me any and all comments to my personal inbox or to this blogs comments (which I will not post).
- Instead of a $135,000 fine for refusing to make a wedding cake for a gay couple (the fine is for emotional, mental, and physical suffering)- the judge should have made a 'statement case' by ordering the folks complaining, to, accept the bakery owners for who they are...to walk away from the situation vowing to show the bakery owners kindness if there were to see them again- to do the very thing that they themselves were demanding....acceptance for the way another thinks. Is the gay couple looking to take the easy way out and demand the bakery owners do the very thing they themselves are unwilling to do?
- To be fair to the couple asking for the cake and to put the refusing bakery owners under the same lens....As a Christian, our life is called to emulate Christ- that being said, we could ask ourselves the popular phrase...WWJD. We know His focus would be how He could reach the heart- We know He never steered away from serving the sinner- We also know that He did not wait to show His love until we accepted Him but instead died for us 'while we were yet sinners' (Rom 5:8). Is our calling to bake those cakes, all the while praying for the ones receiving- that they would come to know Christ's love....that the Lord would touch the heart of each person at the wedding....Is baking the cake an opportunity to show love or is it an opportunity to take the separating stand. Does it make for a light on a hill or for unnecessary unloving static......
- Is the gay community being too demanding- Accept us or else.....fines, verbally lashed, shunned, etc
- Is the Christian community being too self righteous...too conditional- I won't serve you on the basis that your a sinner (and I'm not)....I have to agree with you to accept you.....

next to his duck call and trail mix
I glanced down into his bag- the one sitting in it's usual spot when he is home (on the floor in front of the bar area in the living room) and my eye's stopped. I bent down and picked up the entire bag to make sure that what I thought I was seeing, I was actually seeing....
There, next to my Eli's duck call, trail mix, and mask, in the bag he takes back and forth to the Fire Department on the nights he is on a 24 hour shift, is his Bible.
Never forget how much you need God's Word Eli Ben....
You'll never be sorry that you took it with you into your daily life
There's not a word written that won't do your heart good
There's never an answer to your life's ups or down's that you won't find in it's pages
Carry it always- both with you and in your heart
Well Done Son.

batting as a cougar
By school day, our Ry is a Logger...He attends school in a small mountain town 25 minutes away from our house. The benefits of attending school in a small mountain town is that you go to a small school...like 15 kids or under in your class. Everyone knows your name (cheers) and the teacher to student ratio is such, that falling through the cracks is virtually impossible. One of the obstacles faced when attending a small school is the extra curricular activities that are a given at the bigger schools don't always pan out- it can come down to a simple case of not enough students go our for a certain sport to make a team possible.
This is what happened with baseball this year.
In an effort to be a good neighbor, another small mountain town about 40 or so minutes away from Ry's school offered to co-op and allow the kids that wanted to play ball to come practice (and play) on their team...Ry and Spencer signed up
From 4:00- 6:30 each day and at games, Ry is batting as a cougar
Tonight's double header proved two things.....
Them cougar's know how to play ball (awesome win guys 10/3)
and our Ry has the same talent in baseball my dad has- Ry never owned a glove, ball, or bat before the first practice in March....
BUT
boys a natural
he's got game
Awesome job Ry- Daddy and I are so proud of you!
Great game boys- Keep up the good work!
